I read partly to read another epistolary novel (told in letters), and partly in curiosity because of growing up watching The Music Man, in which the town ladies decry the librarian for advocating "dirty books," including "Baaaalzak!!" Now I know why. The two young women have terribly twisted views of marriage and romance. His writing not only flies in the face of the values that those musical characters stereotype, the men are portrayed as pathetic creatures tied around the little fingers of those immature women. I got through several hours of reading before reading to Wikipedia summary to see when or if it would get any better. When I realized there was lots more story to go and it wasn't going to get any better, I abandoned it.Product details

Letters of Two Brides Honore de Balzac 9781490360232 Books Reviews
every Balzac novel seems to follow the same pattern a relatively slow beginning picks up more and more as it goes on until, by the time you get to the middle, you suddenly realize you've become so drawn into the novel that you almost forgot the distinction between it and reality, and you continue in this state of confused reality until you reach the end of the novel and Balzac throws in a moral so dated to his time and so far from your own moral compass that you're torn from the reality of the novel and forced to wonder, "why did Balzac freakin do this?" this style is called realism, and Balzac is its unfortunate master. i personally cannot get enough
Louise and Renée leave their convent school at the age of 17 and promise to keep in touch by writing to each other. The novel consists entirely of letters, mostly between the two girls but also with a few other letters written by other characters of the novel.
Essentially, Balzac presents a philosophical dialogue between the two young girls as they enter womanhood. Each champions her point of view. Both are strong and devoted to life and happiness as each understands happiness. Louise is passionate, self-willed, sublime. Renée is dutiful, frugal, practical. Louise reaches for heavenly bliss, Renée stands firm. Each wants to protect the other from the reversal of her chosen way of life. Louise wants Renée to experience bliss, Renée wants Louise to take precautions. Their letters span thirteen years during which Louise marries for love and marries well, while Renée marries for duty and equally well.
Which of the two will be the happier? And which the more serene? Does the question even make sense? Can Renée live without knowing there is passion in the world and can Louise reach for the sky if she has no ground beneath her?
A novel of earthly duties and passions written in elevated language.
